They're quite neat, but I wouldn't wish to live without the aesthetic qualities of vertical walls. I think in this case I'd be more inclined toward a turf home, but I wonder how well the dome would be if it were founded on a vertical, subterranean structure...

If some below took the time to look at the site detailing the building of this dome they would find it is very green and far exceeds conventionally built homes. Bamboo composites? ...h'm ...I hadn't thought of that one - where does the glue come from? Nevertheless, the importance of forests to the ecosystem(s) is beyond question. And that's "forests" not woodlots or plantations. Look at N. Africa and the Mid-East... all that used to be forest before us. The Amazon is our last chance. When that goes - all goes. yes i know that.. my point is i think the 60% savings quoted only pertains to specific $ on the structural framework materials..Not everything else that goes into the house...not even the few interior walls and other materials...and all that solid-wood paneling as you were pointing out... numbers like that are easy to fudge greatly without the full story. it's a beautiful home but not so green IMHO .

read all my comments, I have nothing against the dome it self. what I have a problem with is wasting a bunch of wood and then calling it "green". you could build one earth bag too. lexan is not as green as using glass since its petrol based and will have to be replaced every 5 years or so.( it fogs) go ahead and build with aluminium, but is that a renewable resource? bamboo is better. your choice of the word "obsolete" tells me you don't work in this industry. 98% of homes stickbuilt/drywall.

@aloozer yeah, the best way to be fast but precise is to have a relaxed hand. The movement should start from the arm and then go to the hand. There are quite a few people who dislike hide's way of playing but his right hand technique is pretty good. If you compare that to Sugizo's...i think he's just not suited for power metal.

I had some thing called a "camel pouch" or something, it's basically a small backpack with a sack of water in it with a hose that can reach your mouth. I just brought a few cliff bars which held me over to the top of Vernal Falls. It's a 10-12 hour hike if you do it in one day, so be prepared.

Started at 6:00am, got to the bottom of the cables at 9:05am, waited for my group for an hour and a half, waited some more for them to replenish, finally climbed the cables at 11:45am, got to the top of half dome at 1:30pm, stayed up there for 2 hours, took pictures, climbed back down, did not get back to camp until 7:00pm due to dehydration and a wrong route. When i finally got to camp I dove right into a small creek with freezing water for about 5 minutes, warmed up infront of camp fire, slept

Okay, you're argument just runs in a circle with mine. Polystyrene is made from styrene which has been linked to NUMEROUS adverse health affects. Production of polystyrene pollutes the air and creates large amounts of waste. It's like any other plastic and made of petroleum. Obviously not sustainable. Our landfills are being filled with Polystyrene (and any other plastic for that matter) and for those reasons, many places have banned polystyrene (thailand, portland, orange county, etc)

Das ist immer Playback in solchen Shows. Die Leute kommen dahin, um die "Stars" zu sehen.. Wenn dann noch das perfekte Playback läuft ist doch alles Paletti.. Denken sich die Veranstalter. Und solange das Ding ausverkauft ist, wird sich daran auch nix ändern. Wenn es live wäre, bräuchte man vor jedem neuen Set einen Soundcheck zum Einstellen der einzelnen Komponenten. (siehe Rock am Ring etc.).. wer will sowas schon im TV sehn? :-)

One thing I like about these natural dome type homes (regardless of building material) is how they really blend with the environment, but often feature a really beautiful decorative door. Reminds me of the hobbit houses in LOTR. I loved those round doors and the details like interior woodwork, arches, windows etc. The basic structure sort of disappears and the details get to really shine!

If ferro-cement (wire embedded in cement) is used, it should only be necessary to have a 1/2" to 1" thick layer. You don't need that much cement going to waste (as in the suggested 2' to 6" concrete structure). Ferro-cement would be stronger anyway. (They build huge boats that way!)

One problem we have a high water table dig 3" and walla water. Currently we are very close to paying off this place once that happens we will begin saving for a new home to build or buy and that is why I am learning every construction method around the pros and cons. So far it looks like the best solution is shipping container to store stuff like food cloths etc and build a small MDIdome with screened outdoor areas and plenty of shade since we live in the tropics and heat is our enemy.

Straw bale is not considered a wise choice the humudity level here is too high. With tropical weather around every June we want a structure that can take on hurricanes and tornado. I could move but I find it hard to take the land that I have almost paid off. Besides we ahve decent jobs here and plenty of work.

You probably can, but part of the point of straw bale construction is its sustainability. Concrete on the other hand is extremely unsustainable. You also do not get the insulation benefits (sound and heat) that straw bale provides, handy if constructing in cooler climates.

I wonder if you can fill in the gaps on the frame with wood then place concrete on the exterior. Insulate the interior with foam then fill in the cracks interior with spray cans of foam. After that take the interior and apply something to make it look better sheetrock or some other non flamable option. If you make the concrete shell up to 2-6 inches it should be able to withstand a tornado.

you can plaster with Lime mineral, or cover with a proper roof. Or both. What works in the desert is not supposed to work for wet climets. Lots of mud in rainy places, it is possible.
