@Guydabest There is no? CA 642. It's just in your illusion. In fact, this is CI 642, the plane MD11 from Taipei in 1999.8.22 It landed in big storm. The speed of landing was too fast. So the right undercarriage was broken and then the right airfoil got broken. The plane was not crash, but the petrol went out and exploded. There were 3 passengers died and 213 wounded.

Being fully capable of diverting to Taipei, they should have diverted; the wind conditions were obviously terrible for landing. The fireball looks like no-one could survive it (probably because of Hollywood; I know really bad explosions are more debris and smoke than flame.) It's amazing that there were so few fatalities.

When you cant see the runway you cannot land and must fly the missed approach procedure that is on the chart. One of the reasons why they replaced Kai-Tak with an airport with straight-in approaches whichs allows landings in lower weather minimums and Cat 3 approaches, including autoland- just like any other major airport in the world (besides the old Kai Tak)!

An ILS has a localizer and glideslope and takes you aligned straight in to the runway all the way down to a position from which you can land. This approach is an ILS to the checkerboard on the hill, but then you must have the field in sight to make the turn visually to align with the runway. It does not take you straight in to the runway and requires visual maneuvering so it is not called an ILS. Switzerland has some IGS approaches.

@Singaporepunjaban they are talking about the ILS - Instrument Landing System. ILS projects the "glideslope" from the runway threshold. ILS has the optimal vertical descent speed to reach the runway once the "localizer is intercepted" and at :30 you here them anounce "Glideslope". The ILS also keeps the plane centered with the runway.

Not only are they landing in the middle of a huge city. The winds generated around the airport makes the plane feel like a car ride with one wheel missing. I literaly felt the plane drop 25' to the tarmac. What a horrible place.

qwerty3862: The mountains dictate how the wind flows over the land. I don't live in HK (yet), but I believe HK is in monsoon territory. Every year, the wind goes in one direction, and then reverses itself - but of course, you'll be a fool to fly through a monsoon. Landing on Kai Tak was like landing on an aircraft carrier - very hazardous.

A pilot will request a high speed climb in a heavy plane, such as the 747 enroute from Homg kong to San Fransisco in this case, so he can fully retract the flaps into a "clean" wing profile in order to get the most efficicent flight. Flying with flaps deployed causes more drag..which slows the plane down..which burns more fuel..which causes more noise pollution etc etc etc. Usually done when the flap retraction speed to clean profile is above 250 knots.

steven, I think SIA's Newark Liberty(NJ)-Singapore Changi route is the longest, I believe they use the A340-600(?) for the flight. Cathay Pacific flies from JFK to Hong Kong via the Polar route, using the 747-400 and their 777-300ER's.

To thepod..This is a 747-400. One of the best jetliners Boeing ever built. The '744' along with the 777-300 Worldliner, are capable of super-long distance flight. Cathay Pacific flies the 777 from JFK(New York) to HKG via the North Pole which is a very long flight, and Singapore Airlines flies from EWR(Newark Liberty)to Changi, which is one of the longest flights, they use the A340 if I remember correctly.

The closed Kai Tak, because the approach was a bit risky (Checkerbound approach) and a run-over accident with a China Airlines Boeing 747-400 in 1993. What if an airliner crashed in the checker board on the mountain? I agree with you, although I didn't fly to Kai Tak, the videos around here are special with this approach.

The ONLY way low cost long haul will work is by using the A380. That was what was missing from the equation for all the failed airlines like Oasis... Cram 850+ people into an A380 and you CAN make money charging cheap fares. The trick is to make the fares so low that the traditional legacy carriers couldn't hope to compete with them even if they intentionally tried. Wait a few years and Airbus will offer a stretched 380 that can carry up to 1000!

hmm.. i flew with this airline on the back as i MISSED the flight there.. Due to BA being about 2-3 HOURS late! we missed it by about 8 mins! Those f***.. Anyway... i didn't like it... i think we went there by "New zeland airline" That was so much better.. tv when you want to watch it and more leg room!!! This flight was not CI611 i checked the correct information on wikipedia it says On 22 August 1999, China Airlines Flight 642 (operated by China Airlines' subsidiary Mandarin Airlines), which was landing in Typhoon Sam at Hong Kong International Airport on a route from Bangkok International Airport (Don Mueang International Airport) to Hong Kong, rolled over and caught fire, coming to rest upside down beside the runway. Three people onboard were killed.
